Bali Island School continued commitment to creating positive
Service as Action is a collaborative platform for students and a vital part of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP). It offers pupils an opportunity to unite as caring community members and create a positive impact on people’s lives and the world around them.
Various initiatives that embrace humanity have also been implemented throughout the year. Such as the “Giving Forward” Group, which supported Bali’s disabled community by collecting kids’ toys, health supplies, shower kits, snacks, meals, stationery, clothes, and shoes.
A group of BIS students called ‘Santa’s Little Helpers’ also took it upon themselves to raise funds for the Bali Street Mums organization, helping them to address the health needs of impoverished women and children throughout the Denpasar area.
Bali Island School has also been committed to enhancing literary experiences with local schools through the creation of impactful projects like the ‘People’s Perpustakaan’ – a mini-library project that was built by students in 2022. Not only that, another group of BIS students worked alongside Yayasan Pita Kuning on its mission to combat child cancer. Additionally, students also participated in coral cleaning activities with Ocean Gardener, as part of their environmental service.
Addressing challenges in Sumbawa also sparked the creation of the ‘Go the Extra Mile’ shoe drive. Through this initiative, community members were empowered to provide local children with the proper footwear to take strides towards achieving their dreams – an extra step towards supporting the student’s skatepark projects in the same area.
Not only that, through their commitment to positive environmental changes, the BIS community collaborated with Scholars of Sustenance (SoS) to provide 1,148 meals, reducing CO2 waste by 519.13kg – that’s the equivalent of saving 46.35 days of electricity!
“The Service as Action ignites transformative passion in students for community engagement and positive change. The diverse 2023 projects, encompassing humanity, sustainability, and environmental impact reduction, represent a dedication to meaningful, sustainable change, positively influencing both the environment and the community,” says Edward Andrews- CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) and Service as Action Coordinator at Bali Island School
With their hearts, minds, and hands in sync, BIS students are ready to welcome 2024 with a renewed spirit of being global changemakers!
